Why Work at Middleton Primary?
Ethos
Middleton is underpinned by a values-based ethos.
The ethos of RESPECT - resilience, empathy, self-awareness, positivity, excellence, communication and teamwork are a framework for living and learning. Research evidence shows that values-based education promotes high academic achievement, whilst nurturing the individual qualities of both adults and pupils.
Pupils
The principal motivation in working at Middleton are its pupils. Teaching children who are keen and eager to learn reflects the attitudes in class. Adults build warm relationships with children, helping them to thrive and achieve. Disruptive behaviour is not tolerated, resulting in no wasted learning time, leading to high academic achievement for all pupils over time. Middleton is a busy, warm school and is full of laughter, learning, high engagement and creativity.

Teams
Another strong key factor for working at Middleton is its staff team.
There are three classes and teachers in each age group, with one teacher taking the lead as Team Leader:
- Teachers work collaboratively together to assess, plan and prepare learning
- PPA time is taken as a single morning or afternoon session together as a team and is taught by specialist sport, French and music teachers
- A dedicated quiet, workroom for teachers to work together
- Teachers share the workload fairly
- Each subject leader has subject leader time in addition to PPA
- Year Group Leaders are responsible for the day-to-day needs and outcomes of the Year Team
Year Group Teams are organised into pairs to form Phases:
- Each Phase is led by an Assistant Head teacher, who also teaches in one of the year groups. Assistant Heads are accountable for the outcomes of the Phase and responsible for an aspect of whole school leadership
Middleton’s staff are happy and well supported. As a result, the percentage of teachers with at least one period of sickness absence was significantly below national in: 2023/24 – Inspection Data Summary Report

Teaching, Learning & Assessment
Expectations about teaching, learning and assessment are based on academic research and the broad experience of senior leaders. Clear frameworks and explicit expectations increase consistency and quality between teachers across the school.
Middleton has a well-rehearsed and embedded high-quality curriculum from EYFS to the end of Year 6, which prepares children well for Year 7 and beyond. Clear curriculum planning supports weekly planning for teachers.
Behaviour & Personal Development
Pupil's behaviour and personal development is a strength at Middleton because:
- Values-based ethos helps children to develop their moral compass. They learn to make the right choice because it is the right thing to do
- Middleton behaviour framework enables children to own their own behaviour through a language of choice. Adults manage children consistently through the use of scripts, rewards and sanctions. Analysis of sanctions identifies children who need additional support
Specialist Teaching
Music, French and PE are taught by subject specialist teachers during PPA time, increasing quality for children and reducing teaching workload.
Career Growth
Governors and senior leaders are committed to recruiting and retaining the highest quality team. Middleton aims to retain staff by focusing on career development:
- Early Career Teachers: An experienced teacher mentor in the Year Group team will support development, based on the clarity of the teaching, learning, assessment and behaviour frameworks. An Assistant Head teacher will oversee the development, helping staff to make links within and beyond the school
- Promotion from within. Leadership posts are offered internally to Middleton’s pool of talented teachers. Build on a successful foundation as a teacher and, when ready, become a leader at subject, year group or senior level
- Access nationally recognised training programmes including NPQs

Thinking of becoming a teacher?
The Tommy Flowers SCITT invites you to find out about the range of teacher training courses we have to offer across the primary and secondary age phases. Described by Ofsted in 2023 as “a first-class programme” that is “second to none”, we will help you find the right course to “truly flourish” whether that be our Tuition-Fee QTS with PGCE course, the Post Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship or the Assessment Only Route.
The Tommy Flowers SCITT is the only partnership based in Milton Keynes to be accredited to deliver teacher training from September 2024. Working in partnership with schools across Milton Keynes and the surrounding area, our teacher training programmes provide access to outstanding training, mentoring and pastoral care. We nurture trainees into exceptional teachers who develop positive attitudes to learning and behaviour in their pupils, have strong subject and professional knowledge and engage their classes with enthusiasm and energy. With a 100% employment rate following completion of the course, our Early Career Teachers (ECTs) often choose to stay in their placement schools which they describe as being “like a family” (Ofsted, 2023).
After completing the 1-year training courses with the Tommy Flowers SCITT and our partner primary and secondary schools, our trainee teachers are awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with an option to also study for a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in partnership with Northumbria University.
Our trainees come to teaching with a broad range of experiences. Some have just graduated from university but perhaps have family in Milton Keynes, others are moving to the area for the first time. Many have been working or volunteering in schools already and others are having a change of career after working in other industries.
No matter your background, if you have a passion for teaching, are organised and hard-working, please explore our courses further, book a place on an information event and contact us to find out more about studying with the Tommy Flowers SCITT.
