# Week Beginning 01.02.21

01.02.21

Start today’s learning by looking at the maths starter of the day on the school website – this is a mini arithmetic test focused on problem solving.

In the main part of the lesson, we are going to continue to add fractions using pictorial methods but will now explore adding two or more proper fractions where the total is greater than 1. We will record the total as an improper fraction but will then convert this to a mixed number using our prior knowledge. After this, Mr Morris will direct you to complete one of the following challenges:

This video recaps adding fractions with different denominators less than 1 before looking at adding fractions which will equal more than 1.

02.02.21

Start today’s learning by looking at the maths starter of the day on the school website: this is a solvemoji. You need to use the clues you have to work out what the value of each emoji is – this will help you to then work out what the unknown final answer is.

In the main part of the lesson, we are going to move on to adding two fractions where one or both are mixed numbers or improper fractions. You will use a method of adding the wholes and then adding the parts. You will also learn how to give your answer in its simplest form. After this, Miss Ring will direct you to complete one of the following challenges:

WALT subtract fractions

Start today’s learning by looking at the maths starter of the day on the school website: this is a solvemoji. You need to use the clues you have to work out what the value of each emoji is – this will help you to then work out what the unknown final answer is.

In the main part of the lesson, we are going to subtract fractions with different denominators for the first time, using our knowledge from previous lessons of adding fractions with different denominators to help us. We will look at various visual methods as well as multiplying to find equivalent fractions. After this, Miss Bushell will direct you to complete one of the following challenges:

WALT subtract mixed numbers

Start today’s learning by looking at the maths starter of the day on the school website: this is a solvemoji. You need to use the clues you have to work out what the value of each emoji is – this will help you to then work out what the unknown final answer is.

In the main part of the lesson, we are going to subtract mixed numbers, using our knowledge from previous lessons of adding mixed numbers to help us. We will look at various visual methods as well as multiplying to find equivalent fractions before subtracting. After this, Mr Morris will direct you to complete one of the following challenges:

WALT subtract mixed numbers (breaking the whole)

Start today’s learning by looking at the maths starter of the day on the school website: this is a solvemoji. You need to use the clues you have to work out what the value of each emoji is – this will help you to then work out what the unknown final answer is.

In the main part of the lesson, we are going to subtract mixed numbers, using our knowledge from yesterday’s lesson, but today we will need to break the whole. We will look at various visual methods as well as a more abstract method. After this, Mr Morris will direct you to complete one of the following challenges:

Need some more help?
This video is a recap of a more abstract method to help you subtract mixed numbers
