Support for reading and phonics

If you are finding you do not have many books at home, you can use the Oxford Owl website for free to read books of your child's colour book band level. Use the link below to access the website. If you would like a bit more information, Mrs Dyer has filmed a fantastic video showing how it works on the Foundation Online Learning page.

We do not provide weekly spellings in Year 1, however we do encompass these words during our phonics lessons. Below you will find the Year 1 common exception word list and the 'tricky words' (these cannot be segmented and blended) for each phonics phase. Children should not move on to the next phase of tricky words before securing the list of words in the previous phase.
We have also introduced Spellzone this year where children can complete their 'course pathway' which is personalised to them.  All Year 1 children have completed their Spelling Ability Test and been provided with a login, however if you need these details please don't hesitate to contact us on the Purple Mash Blog.
