WALT: use 'a' and 'an' correctly.

Look at the photos below. I have sorted some different items in my house into whether you would use 'a' or 'an' in front of the word. What do you notice about the names of the objects? Why have they been put with the other items?

Picture 2

Well spotted!

The items in the first picture all begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

They would use 'an' - an egg, an orange, an umbrella.

The items in the second picture all begin with a consonant sound (the rest of the alphabet).

They would use 'a' - a book, a whisk, a yoghurt.

Why not see if you can find some objects in your house and sort them, then upload a picture to your class blog!

There is a also an activity to complete below and a 2do set on PurpleMash smiley
