Below are some home learning cards and flashcards you may want to use either in addition to or in place of the phonics lessons. These can be played with any sounds that your child may be working on!

Additionally, the Department for Education have released daily phonics videos on their Youtube channel for Foundation and Year 1. The videos for Reception may be useful for recapping Phase 3 sounds and tricky words and Year 1 videos are focusing on Phase 5 sounds and tricky words.

Common Exception Words

In your neatest handwriting, practice the spelling of the Common Exception Words. There are two sheets, you may want to do both on the same day or over 2 days. You should aim to spend around 20 minutes in this activity.

Tricky Words – Practice your tricky words by spelling them onto the lily pads.

Tricky Word Spotter – How many of these words can you find in a story of your choice?

 

You might want to keep a tally for the number of times that you see each word.

 

Split Digraph Spelling – How many of the words from the table can you sound out and spell? You may want to visit this activity over two phonics sessions. There is an answer sheet to check your spelling once you have finished.

Share a story – Read a story with someone from your household. You may want to read all of the book or take it in turns. Keep a list of words that you found tricky and challenge yourself to recognise these words when you read them again either in the same book or a different text.

Remember to sound out and blend carefully - all of the words are real words. You might want to keep a list of any words that you find tricky to read and learn.

Using your reading book or a book that you are enjoying; create your own wordsearch using a selection of words from your book. You might want to include the words that you found tricky when reading.

 

You might want to save finding the words in your wordsearch  for another day or you could give it to someone in your home to complete. You can use the template below or create your own.

W.A.L.T Use our understanding of Phase 5 phonics to read sentences and match to pictures.

 

Below is a document with sentences and matching pictures. How many of these sentences can you sound out and match to the correct picture?

You may choose to print out the pictures to match by cutting and matching or drawing lines. You might choose to read the sentences on the screen and point to the matching pictures.

Remember to sound out carefully. All of the words in the sentences are real words and not alien words.

On your Purple Mash account you have been set a 2Do activity to complete. Read the sentences carefully and complete with the correct 'wh' or 'ph' word. Remember to use all of your sounds to help with reading all of the words.

WALT identify the 'u_e' split digraph

 

Today's sound has two pronunciations: 'oo' like in 'flute' and 'you' like in 'cube'.

Seeing as lots of you really enjoyed the Purple Mash task on Wednesday, I have set another 2Do for you on the 'o_e' and 'u_e' split digraphs to build the words correctly.

Remember it is a timed task so you will need to be ready to go :)

Today we are beginning to learn about trigraphs. Trigraphs are when three graphemes make one phoneme (3 letters make 1 sound). The trigraph we are learning today is the 'air' sound. W.A.L.T Explore the 'ou' sound.

 

Today we are exploring the 'ou' sound like in the words mouth and cloud. Below is a link to the Phonics Play website 'Buried Treasure' game. You need to select 'Phase 5' and the 'ou' option. You might want to challenge yourself and add in other sounds from Phase 5 that we have already covered.

W.A.L.T Identify the 'ew' sound.

 

Today we are looking at the sound ‘ew’, like in the words blew and jewel. Print out the picture of the treasure chest or draw your own, then fill it with jewels that have different 'ew' words on them. You could use the Phonics Play website to help you identify 'ew' words (Choose a game a select the 'ew' option). Take a look at Miss Wakley's example to help you.

W.A.L.T Identify the 'ph' sound.

 

Our sound is ‘ph’ like in the word phone and phonics!. It sounds the same as 'f'.

Can you pretend to be a deflating beach ball, making your ‘ph’ sound as you let all the air out?

WALT identify the 'ir' digraph

 

In today's phonics lesson we are recapping the 'ir' sound as in 'stir'.

 

Below there is a PowerPoint with some starter games that include all of the sounds that we have been looking at so far in our Home Learning. There are some Noughts and Crosses games that you can play with your adult, a sibling or even by yourself!

 

Then, we will look at our new sound in the PowerPoint and there is an activity for you to complete with some words that contain our sound of the day!

WALT identify the 'oy' sound

 

For this sound we are learning 'oy' as in 'boy'. Have a listen to Geraldine in the video below. Can you see anything in your house that has this sound in the word?

Once you have found some words around your house. You can make your own flower like the one below! If you write the words you can think of on some petals and then stick it together with the sound as the middle of your flower. 

 

You will need:

 

* 1 flower stem

* 4 petals

* 1 middle of flower

* 1 piece of paper to stick everything to

 

If you want, you can draw your flower onto a piece of paper and write the words onto the flower - instead of cutting the pieces out.

For this sound we are exploring 'ey' like donkey. You will notice that this digraph sounds and feels the same as 'ea' like pea and 'ee' like tree.

For this sound, we are looking at 'ea' as in 'pea'. Watch someone else's mouth as they say this sound. It is like a big cheesy grin! Can you show someone else a big cheesy grin saying 'ea'?

Task

 

Evil Pea from Supertato has lots of mini evil peas that need 'ea' names! Draw some mini evil peas and find 'ea' words to name them with! They could be real or alien if you like.

Design your very own tie with different 'ie' words! You can either draw your own or print the template attached. Maybe you can find things around your house and write them down. Don't forget to add some colour to your tie!

 

As a challenge, you could also include words with our other 'ie' sounds in our sound family!

The action for this sound is to pretend to prick your thumb with a needle and say 'ouch!'

 

You will find the song on Monday's Jolly Phonics video if you would like to listen to it.

 

Play the game on Phonics Bloom to sound out all the 'ou' words.

Have a go at reading these real and alien 'ou' words. Can you put the sound buttons on them?
