Letters and Sounds

On this page you will find information on what each group has been learning in their daily Letters and Sounds (Phonics) sessions.  You will find information on your child's current group teacher in the inside cover of their homework book.

You should try to spend between 10 and 20 minutes daily recapping sounds and doing different activities to reinforce early reading. These may be:

  • Recapping and reinforcing sounds children have learnt so far
  • Introducing your child to a new sound: recognising it, reading it and writing it
  • Identifying sounds in words e.g. sh is in shop, ship, push, cash, short
  • Reading tricky words
  • Sounding out and writing words (Challenge! adding sound buttons)
  • Orally composing, holding and writing simple sentences e.g. The cat has got a hat.
  • Playing phonics games (Phonics Play)
  • Reading decodable stories (Oxford Owl) or hunting for sounds in a story

If you have any questions, please post them on the Foundation blog on Purple Mash and a member of the Foundation team will respond.

Please find the sets of Tricky Words we have been learning in school. You need to work through them in numerical order. Once your child can read them all by sight, you need to go back through and practise writing them from memory.
