Picture 1

As part of our learning we will start off by learning all about superheroes that we may have seen in cartoons, comics and movies. We will write stories and learn how to describe characters effectively. Later on in the term we will move on to learning about modern day superheroes and we will compare them to superheroes from the past such as Florence Nightingale and Samuel Pepys. We look forward to sharing our learning with you, please like and follow our Twitter pages.

Important information & Expectations

The staff in Year 2 are: Mrs Dyer, Miss Fowler, Miss Bushell and Miss Watkis.

Homework: homework for English and maths will be given out every Friday linking to our class work. All homework must be returned to school by the following Wednesday. Please support your child with their home learning.

Spellings: your child will bring home a spelling booklet every half term as part of the ‘Middleton Spelling Scheme’, which is made up of 26 booklets that children will work on from Years 2-6. The booklets that get sent home each half term are for you to keep at home as they contain suggested strategies for practicing spellings and is also a useful guide for you to know what rules are being covered.

Year 2 will begin on list 1 this term and will work up to list 6 by the end of the year. The booklets will contain the spelling rules and patterns that your child will be working on during that half term. The lists of words in them are examples which follow the spelling rule and may be tested that week. A look, say, cover, write, check sheet will be issued weekly outlining up to 10 words that will be in the spelling dictation test on a Friday. These words are taken from the rule or pattern being taught that week and from the list of common exception words. Please support your child to complete the look, say, cover, write sheet each week. This sheet does not need to be brought back into school once completed.

Library: Woodpeckers will visit the library on Monday and Starlings and Blackbirds will go on Tuesday.

PE days: please ensure that your child’s PE kit is in school every day. For indoor PE, children will need a white t-shirt and black shorts (plimsolls are optional). For outdoor PE, children will need trainers and a warm tracksuit. If earrings cannot be removed, please provide medical tape to cover them. Also children with long hair will be asked to tie it back for the duration of the PE lesson. Please ensure all PE kit (as well as all school uniform) is named.

Trips/events: Throughout the term we have planned many exciting events including a superhero day, a visit from a nurse, a Great Fire of London Day and a superhero assembly. More details to follow.

Reading: Please ensure that your child reads daily to an adult at home and that this reading is recorded in their Reading Record with a short comment detailing how they got on. We understand the pressures of family life and encourage the children to, where possible, read 5 times a week to an adult at home. This could also be an older sibling!
To support your child, please ask them questions about what they have read. Reading books should be brought into school daily. Children have the opportunity to change reading books if they need to every day.
