Design and Technology

 

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, children design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

 

Aims

In Design and Technology, we offer our children:

 

  • to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world

 

  • to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users

 

  • to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

 

  • to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

Foundation discussed which foods we need in our diet to have a healthy diet. We discussed that it is okay to eat a little bit of sugar once in a while! We made Diwali sweets to celebrate Diwali. The children mixed the ingredients, let them set in the fridge and then tried them - they were delicious!

Year 5 planned and designed rockets which they went on to make. They thought about how they could make the rocket streamline and what material would be the most durable. They are then going to test the rockets to see what went well and what could be improved with their designs.

Year 2 worked hard to bake bread linked to their Great Fire of London Topic. They discussed what ingredients they would need, the different stages the break will go through and what the outcome of the cooking will be.
